  • 1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk

Optional Add-ins

A saucepan on a stovetop contains condensed milk with chocolate chips starting to melt.
  • Stir until melted and smooth. Remove from heat and add the vanilla.

Notes

Make this microwave fudge instead: Use a microwave safe bowl to melt the ingredients together. Microwave for one minute, stir, then continue in 30 second intervals until the mixture is smooth and creamy. Finish the recipe as normal.
Serve: Let it stand on its own or pair with a cookie or dessert tray. Wrap it in a lined box for an easy edible gift during the holidays.
Store: Place fudge squares in an airtight container, preferably separated by wax or parchment paper to prevent sticking, and refrigerate for up to 7 days or freeze for up to 1 month. Defrost frozen fudge in the refrigerator before serving.

Chocolate fudge has been a Christmas staple in my family since I was a little girl, and this 3-ingredient version comes closer to my grandma’s fudge recipe than anything else I’ve tried over the years. I’ve come a long way from sneaking pieces off the holiday cookie tray to making the best chocolate fudge in my own kitchen whenever the craving hits, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

The secret is in the butter — it’s what sets this apart from a basic 2-ingredient fudge, making the texture noticeably smoother, creamier, and better at holding its shape. You’ll taste the difference in every single bite.

The whole batch comes together with just 10 minutes of hands-on time, which makes it one of my most-reached-for easy fudge recipes (right up there with fudge with nuts and peanut butter fudge) whenever I need something quick and guaranteed to impress. Whether I’m filling a holiday cookie tray, wrapping up a homemade gift for a neighbor, or just satisfying a chocolate craving on a random afternoon, this recipe never lets me down.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Perfect for beginners or when you need a delicious dessert quick.
  • This recipe calls for easy-to-find ingredients that you probably already have in your pantry.
  • 3 ingredients, a pan, and a baking dish are all you need, which means clean-up will be a breeze.
  • Make it as simple or as loaded with mix-ins as you want.

How to Make 3-Ingredient Fudge

The ingredients do everything – smooth chocolate, sweet condensed milk, and rich butter complement each other so perfectly that all you need to do is mix them all together, freeze, and enjoy!

Scroll to the bottom of this post for a printable recipe card with a full list of ingredients, measurements, and step-by-step instructions.

Ingredients You Need

A bowl of condensed milk, a bowl of chocolate chips, and a small bowl of butter cubes.
  • Semi-sweet chocolate chips: I use dark chocolate chips or 100% chocolate because the condensed milk has enough sweetness for me. If you like things on the sweeter side, start with semi-sweet chocolate chips.
  • Sweetened condensed milk: Sweetens the fudge and helps create the dense, fudgy consistency that we all love. Make sure you use condensed milk, not evaporated milk.
  • Butter: Adds richness and contributes to the smooth, velvety texture of the fudge. I typically use regular salted butter, and unsalted when I add a garnish of sea salt.

Optional add-ins:

  • Vanilla extract: Adds sweetness and helps balance the richness of chocolate and butter.
  • Sea salt: Often overlooked, but salt is great at balancing the sweetness and rounding out the flavors of the fudge.

Step-By-Step Instructions

Traditional fudge can be tricky to make, requiring bringing the mixture to the soft-ball stage or using a candy thermometer. None of that is needed here. Just follow the easy steps below to make the perfect 3-ingredient fudge!

  1. Line the dish with parchment paper. Give some overhang so the paper is easy to pull up and remove later.
  2. Mix all the ingredients in a small saucepan and warm until melted.
  3. Pour into the dish, smooth and chill.
  4. Cut into small squares and serve or store.

Make this microwave fudge instead: Use a microwave safe bowl to melt the ingredients together. Microwave for one minute, stir, then continue in 30 second intervals until the mixture is smooth and creamy. Finish the recipe as normal.

Variations

Easily make this chocolate fudge recipe your own by adding your favorite mix-ins, spices, or other flavors. Classic plain is already delicious, but I like to dress it up according to the occasion, or my mood! Try these fun twists:

  • No chocolate chips on hand? Substitute with a chopped chocolate bar of your choice. Try swapping in white chocolate chips.
  • Add chopped nuts like walnuts, pecans, peanuts, pistachios, or almonds for crunch.
  • Fold in crushed Oreos to make a delicious cookies-and-cream version. This is my kids’ favorite. They love all things Oreo, including Oreo cake pops and Christmas Oreos.
  • Swirl creamy peanut butter into the fudge before it sets for a delicious sweet and salty combination.
  • Add chopped dried fruits like dried cranberries, cherries, or apricots, caramel bits, toffee bits, or pretzel bites to the mixture to vary the texture and for extra indulgence.
  • Mix in 1/2 teaspoon of mint extract for a fresh and cooling flavor.
  • Spice up your chocolate fudge with spices like cinnamon, chai spice, pumpkin spice, cardamom, cayenne pepper, or a bit of chili powder for warmth or subtle heat.
  • For Christmas, I like to sprinkle the top with crushed peppermint candies or candy cane, dress it up with red and green sprinkles, or dust it with edible glitter for that extra festive flair. Place the squares in a cute box or tin, tie a ribbon around it, and you’ve got the most thoughtful holiday gift ever!

Jessica’s Tips

  • Use a premium chocolate for this recipe to achieve the perfect velvety texture. The richness and smoothness of high-quality chocolate make a noticeable difference when it’s turned into fudge.
  • If you’re adding toppings, sprinkle them on while the fudge is still warm and soft, so they stick well. Press them in gently with your fingertips before chilling.
  • Run a knife under hot water to heat it up, then use it to cut into the fudge, wiping it clean in between cuts. This way, you’ll get slices with clean, smooth edges perfect for holiday gifts.

How to Store This Recipe

This fudge is soft and will melt when left out at room temperature for too long. Place fudge squares in an airtight container, preferably separated by wax or parchment paper to prevent sticking, and refrigerate for up to 7 days or freeze for up to 1 month. Defrost frozen fudge in the refrigerator before serving.

What to Serve with a Quick Fudge

This easy chocolate fudge is rich enough to stand on its own, but it pairs with a dessert board alongside peanut butter cup cookies, caramels, and other bite-sized treats whenever you want something that looks effortlessly put together.

During the holiday season, this homemade chocolate fudge earns its place on every cookie tray with Christmas popcorn balls and M&M Christmas cookies for a festive assortment that covers every craving at the table. It also pairs perfectly with a mug of peppermint hot chocolate or non-alcoholic eggnog for a cozy holiday treat that feels both nostalgic and special.

My new favorite fudge! So east to make, only three ingredients! Loved the texture, super fudgy. I added half a teaspoon of peppermint extract

    1. I also REALLY like adding in peppermint extract! Mint + chocolate is a great combo. You can press crushed candy canes on the top around Christmas time for a pretty visual too! Thanks so much for sharing your success with us Mary!

    1. Hi, Maryanne! Great idea! You can definitely swirl marshmallow fluff into this fudge. Just let the fudge cool slightly so it starts to set but is still soft, then drop small spoonfuls of fluff on top and gently swirl with a knife before it finishes cooling. It’ll add a fun, sweet ribbon without changing the texture too much. Enjoy!

    1. Hi, Charlene. If your granddaughter is lactose intolerant, there are dairy-free condensed milk alternatives like coconut crean or cashew cream that might be suitable. I haven’t tested these yet myself but they seem like the best choices to start with.
